Embracing Equity

Upon a request I received to write something on “EMBRACING EQUITY”, I of course, began by delving into the meaning of the word “EQUITY.” It became apparent to me that the word itself seemed to invite a constant companion –the word, “EQUALITY.” “Hmmm…,” I thought. I had never thought of associating the two words: EQUALITY and EQUITY.” And indeed—after my studies that led to an MBA from the Columbia Graduate School of Business, I hardly gave deep thought to the word, EQUITY except in its association with financial investments.
From my rather hasty research on the definition of the word EQUITY—and what appears to be its rather steady companion, EQUALITY, I learned that:
EQUALITY:
• “each individual or group is given the same resources or opportunities…;”
• “. being fair and impartial…”
EQUITY:
"Each person has different circumstances; actions are needed to allocate resources and opportunities to reach equal outcomes; Fair and impartial treatment; meeting people where they are and allocating resources and opportunities as needed to create equal outcomes; adjust the imbalances…”
It seems to me that both words and their definitions have little to do with present-day realities—especially regarding the actions of legislative branches—whether at the local, state, or Federal level. And one can never forget the near overthrow of the United States Government as exhibited during the January 6 Horror. Further—as an African American—and more specifically as an African American Woman—I pause and have to give deep thought to whether at this point in the History of the Nation—and while I can recognize that the word EQUITY exists—the thought of “EMBRACING EQUITY,” stirs up in me many thoughts and questions. And as African American—and it churns an instinctive reaction of wariness and suspicion about EMBRACING the word EQUITY. I have difficulty fully accepting that it exists in today’s USA. Indeed, we still have a long way to go. The encouraging thing is—we haven’t given up on achieving DEFINITIVE EQUITY and or FULL EQUALITY!!!
