Celebrating World Elder Abuse Awareness Month with Council House Residents
Resident Manager, Ms. Kate Acquah of the Council House apartments in Suitland, Maryland, invited the
Juanita C. Grant Foundation’s
Founder, President and CEO, to present on Elder Abuse and Fraud Prevention. The June 11th training marked celebrating World Elder Abuse Awareness for the entire month. What was striking about the residents was their storytelling. I learned how many life journeys had encountered or experienced one of the five Center for Disease categories of elder abuse. Of note, many of the residents cited examples of mental and bullying abuse. Our discussion on scams was not far removed from their daily routines. The rise of AI as the new opportunity on the block for scams was a key topic. The constant refrain in the training was to recognize the “red flags” of any scam to interrupt and slow down the pressure tactics. Elder abuse is opportunity driven. One must gain the trust or instill fear with a sense of urgency or secrecy. Opportunities for elder abuse can be found within the home by a trusted caregiver or family member. Elder abuse outside of the home may come in forms of intrusive emails, solicitation calls, government impersonators, reverse mortgages and grifters. At the close of the training, the residents were verbalizing how each of them would be more aware and prepared to recognize, interrupt and report suspected elder abuse.
All disruptors have one thing in common: they are change agents. In 2018, the Juanita C. Grant Foundation challenged the status quo by amplifying the voice of older adults, listening and taking the path to be a disruptor of elder abuse. "Financial fraud, scams, and elder abuse have seen alarming increases in recent years, with older adults often the most vulnerable targets." Elder Financial Abuse Statistics 2024: Common Scams & Frauds | ConsumerAffairs®. Over the past 6 years, the Juanita C. Grant Foundation in partnership with Prince George's Parks and Recreation, developed and executed the Elder Abuse and Fraud Prevention Training Series in all 9 districts of Prince George's County. After each training, the evaluation data showed that "awareness" is the key to prevention, but it also highlighted the need for targeted intervention. Breaking the cycle of viral scams requires empowering the community to create its own solutions through innovative collaboration with government agencies.
On May 15th, 2024, the Juanita C. Grant Foundation and the United States Attorney's Office District of Maryland presented a full-day invitation-only summit on Victim Impact, Financial Fraud Prevention, and Legal Rights at Prince George’s Ballroom. Attendees included Federal and State prosecutors, medical experts, elder abuse and older adult advocates and representatives of diverse communities to establish common ground in developing targeted interventions to address "The Intersection of Elder Abuse, Traumatic Impact of Scams and Residual Health Repercussions."
S. Orlene Grant, Founder, President and CEO of the Juanita C. Grant Foundation, served as co-organizer and chair of the summit. Erik L. Barron, Marland United States Attorney provided opening remarks. Andy Mao, Department of Justice’s National Elder Justice Coordinator, Elder Justice Initiative was the Keynote Speaker. Ms. Grant challenged participants to network across agencies, disciplines, organizations and higher education research fields to create targeted and intentional interventions to disrupt and dismantle elder abuse. The Juanita C. Grant Foundation is proud to announce a pioneering resource hub dedicated to elder justice and the prevention of elder abuse. This initiative represents our commitment to harnessing collective knowledge and fostering a community united against the injustice faced by older adults. By aggregating and curating a new wealth of resources from trusted agencies and experts, we aim to create a central repository that not only reflects our deep understanding of elder abuse but also serves as a catalyst for inspirational and behavioral change. Our goal is to transcend traditional silos to foster intentional collaboration and targeted interventions in the fight to protect and empower our aging population.

This is the second of the elder abuse and fraud prevention trainings for 2024 to professional organizations which is enhancement of previous year’s panel trainings. Ms. Grant’s presentation linked the importance of social connectedness as a deterrent to elder abuse. “By staying engaged with your friends, family and the community, you build in a protective network that can provide emotional support, be concerned when your behavior changes and be a soundboard before a scam is successful.”
The Juanita C. Grant Foundation conducted an Elder Abuse and Fraud Prevention Training at the Maryland Recreation and Park Association’s Annual Senior Conference. The training was held January 11, 2024 at the Rockville Senior Center in Rockville, Maryland. Ms. S. Orlene Grant, President and CEO conducted the training to MRPA members and professional staff. This is the first of the elder abuse and fraud prevention trainings for 2024 geared to the unique position of the members and staff to observe changes in behavior in some of their older adult clients that may indicate signs of elder abuse. Being educated to the “red flags” of elder abuse which includes financial fraud can help alert an individual when you may need to check with the individual if they are experiencing something traumatic their lives. Taking “concrete steps” to intervene and if necessary to report suspected abuse interrupts the cycle of secrecy surrounding elder abuse.
