Margaret's Story
After attending a Juanita C. Grant Foundation Fraud and Scam Prevention Workshop, Margaret noticed a troubling change in her best friend's behavior. She was no longer available for their weekly lunches, daily phone calls, or church services. Recalling the "red flags" discussed in the workshop, particularly isolation and pressure tactics often used by scammers. Margaret recognized that her friend could be at risk. Acting on the "concrete steps" taught in the session, Margaret reached out to her friend's pastor and adult children to share her concerns and initiate a wellness check. This timely intervention prevented her friend from transferring $60,000 in savings to purchase fictitious "gold bars" through a bitcoin scam.
Margaret's story illustrates the real-world impact of equipping community members with the knowledge and confidence to act, transforming awareness into prevention and protecting the financial security of older adults.
