Local Foundation Announces Roundtable to Combat Ageism

Dec 06, 2018

Three in five older employees have seen or experience ageism

The Juanita C. Grant Foundation (JCGF) in collaboration with the 50+ Workforce Initiative Planning Partners announced the convening of the 1st Annual Roundtable on Aging: Combating Ageism. The event will be held Monday December 10, 2018 from 9:30 – 12:00pm at Employ Prince George’s, in Largo, MD.

According to a recent AARP report, three in five older employees have seen or experienced age discrimination in the workplace. Ageism remains a pervasive force against the 50+ community and is often a silent deterrent to many striving to gain and maintain economic stability, access healthcare and be recognized as a valued member of the community. Often, “perennial

workers” are automatically discounted as irrelevant. Too often employers hold unsubstantiated myths about older workers: technophobia, lower productively, chronic illness, inability to learn new skills. These stereotypes blind employers to the true value of a mature work force who can contribute greatly to the office culture and a company’s bottom-line.

Through a guided discussion the JCGF will address the impact of ageism in the County and develop progressive steps to combat of ageism.

Furthermore, the JCGF plans to use the insights gained from the discussion as the basis for the 2020 Conference on Aging, a nationwide event calling on officials at the local, state, and federal levels to address ageism to meet the demands of an inclusive workforce. Current hiring and personnel practices are neither equipped to handle the biggest labor shortage in almost five decades, nor the desire for older workers to continue to work past traditional retirement age.
