Local Non-Profit Continues Its Battle to Excise Ageism in Our Communities

Apr 17, 2019

The Juanita C. Grant Foundation (JCGF) in conjunction with the Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation M-NCPPC, is to convene a second edition of its Roundtable on Aging event, a community conversation about the necessity of an aging-friendly society, and the work needed to make it a reality. The event will take place on May 16, 2019, at the Laurel/Beltsville Senior Activity Center located at 7120 Contee Road, Laurel, MD 20707. It will begin with registration at 9:30AM, to be followed by the discussion, which will last from 10AM until Noon.

Fifty-one years after the landmark Age Discrimination in Employment Act, workplace bias is a phenomenon that most people who fall within that demographic still have to contend with. In fact, the AARP reports that age discrimination complaints filed by workers over 65 of diverse racial and gender backgrounds, has doubled in comparison to preceding years. The roundtable will tackle issues such as these as well as others, creating a dialogue that serves to identify and discuss practical measures by which ageism can be eradicated. Some of the other topics to be touched on are the creation of intergenerational diversity, advocacy for the aging, and the improvement of public policy at local, state and federal levels for the betterment of the 50+ community.

It is to combat disparities like these and many others that plague the 50+ community, that the Juanita C. Grant Foundation works tirelessly, continuously seeking out opportunities to engage with, and fulfil the community’s needs in areas such as workforce development, preventative health initiatives, and public policy. This roundtable event will continue to build upon the groundwork laid at the inaugural event last year.
