Long Distance becomes Next Door

This month celebrates my five-year anniversary serving as a Personable, Attentive, Listenable Sharers (PALS)/Village Connector Experience (VCE) Ambassador, representing the Juanita C. Grant Foundatiom (JCGF) , serving clients facing life changing challenges, social isolation and loneliness. The three clients that I assist have been in the program from the beginning and over the years we have developed a true friendship that continues to grow.
My role as an ambassador to the three clients has been very rewarding. They care about having someone who listens, shows compassion and able to assist with recommending appropriate services if the need should arise. The services provided include assisting the clients with finding resources they may need, advising them of different programs that may help in a particular situation and sometimes just talking them through a difficult family issue. They are encouraged and appreciate having someone outside of the family so that they can share some insights to resolve or assist with a problem if necessary.
The women I happily serve continue to grow and have made remarkable changes in their lives but still look forward to the weekly calls. The dutiful commitment to checking on them weekly has turned into something more than Ambassador and client. All of them consider our relationship, “a friendship” that has grown continuously, and we all seem to be a special part of each other’s lives as we chat weekly about what’s happening within our surroundings. There is a lot of positive energy, fascinating weekly stories, daily activities, shared family relations, outside events and general life experiences shared regularly. The conversations go on anywhere from five minutes to one hour, or more. We all look forward to the weekly calls.
The women have embraced this service, and it has served all of us very well. It will be hard to end these sessions because they are friends now and we share a greater bond than just talking, it has become something very special that none of us expected.
Although the country is going through some difficult changes for these older women, they still have hope, and they are thankful and embrace the understanding that this program has made a tremendous difference in their lives and continue to look forward to each session. As one of them has stated,
“I appreciate the JCGF, and the program extended to me in my time of need”.
