Dads…The Wind Beneath Our Dreams!

To me, my Dad was bigger than life. In the early 60’s my Mom passed away and my Dad assumed the role of both mom and dad in raising three little girls. Considering the traditional parental roles in existence during the 60’s, this was quite an undertaking by my Dad; however, he didn’t give up. Yes, he was horrible at combing little girls’ hair; however, he was a good cook and extremely organized. We sometimes used to muse that we lived on a military installation – everything was so exacting. But my fondest memories were of how my Dad encouraged us to pursue our dreams.
My Dad never discouraged us from trying different things or speculating on which career path to pursue. He didn’t label certain sports or careers as being gender-specific. His approach was to encourage us to think clearly through as to the necessary requirements for each undertaking and to access whether we were willing to prepare ourselves to undertake said requirements.
Being youngest, I think I was the most fanciful in my pursuits. I wanted to be a professional boxer; astronaut; fashion designer; police officer; and attorney. So, in pursuit of one my fantasies my Dad taught me how to box. He also encouraged and instructed me to contact any organization that had oversight over a particular industry or area and request any available information to help me hone in on the requirements of a particular job. I always called him my biggest cheerleader because he always encouraged me to expand my horizon.
So, to the Dads, who don’t always get the spotlight and quietly encourage their children, I want to thank you on behalf our society for the love, encouragement and strength you have instilled in your children. Though you might not always hear a word of thanks, more than likely your children are witnessing and benefiting from your words of wisdom, sage guidance, and presence in their lives. And to those men who are not biological fathers, thanks for stepping up and stepping in where there’s a need. The children you embrace are able to experience how it feels to having a loving father in their lives and gain valuable life lessons from your presence in their lives.
To all you Dads, don’t forget that your child sees you as being bigger than life. Your encouragement; time-spent with them; humor and love speaks volumes and will always be remembered. Even if you don’t hear their admiration every day, know that your children cherish you and remember, you are the wind beneath their dreams.
Happy Fathers’ Day!
