National Employ Older Workers Week: Recognizing the Benefits of an Age-Diverse Workforce

Did you know that September 22 – 28, 2024 marks National Employ Older Workers Week? It's a time to celebrate the valuable contributions of our more seasoned colleagues and highlight the importance of age diversity in the workplace.
Let's talk about numbers for a moment. Over the past two decades, the share of workers 55 and older has almost doubled, increasing from 13% in 2000 to 23% in 2021. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts this trend will continue, with workers 55 and older projected to make up 25% of the workforce by 2031. That is 1 out of 4 of all workers! This trend reflects changing demographics, longer life expectancies, and evolving attitudes towards retirement.
Why should companies employ older workers? They bring numerous benefits:
- Experience and Expertise: Years of knowledge and skills valuable for problem-solving and mentoring.
- Strong Work Ethic: Commitment, reliability, and dedication to quality work.
- Stability and Loyalty: Often have long-term employment histories, contributing to lower turnover.
- Diverse Perspectives: Unique life experiences leading to innovative ideas and enriching workplace culture.
Despite their value, older workers face challenges, including age discrimination, which involves treating an applicant or employee less favorably because of their age. Initiatives like National Employ Older Workers Week aim to shift perceptions and promote age-friendly, intergenerational workplaces.
The AARP Employer Pledge Program, a nationwide group of employers, promotes equal opportunity for all workers regardless of age. These companies affirm the value of experienced workers and commit to developing diverse, multi-generational workforces.
The Age Friendly Institute provides information about age-friendly employers and inclusive environments. They maintain a list of Certified Age Friendly Employers™ committed to supporting mature workers.
Supporting older workers involves creating inclusive hiring practices, offering flexible work arrangements, and providing skill development opportunities at all career stages. Colleagues should recognize the value of experience brought to the workplace regardless of age and foster mutual respect and learning across generations.
Age-inclusive workplaces benefit everyone. For employers, embracing age diversity is both a moral imperative and a strategic advantage, tapping into a wealth of experience and knowledge that can drive innovation and success.
To create age-friendly workplaces:
- Implement fair hiring practices
- Offer flexible work options
- Provide ongoing training and development
- Foster mentorship programs
- Create an inclusive culture that values all ages
- Address age bias in the workplace
- Ensure equal access to promotions and opportunities
- Recognize and utilize the unique skills of older workers
By embracing age diversity, organizations can create a more dynamic, innovative, and productive work environment that benefits employees of all ages and the company.
