Lifelong Learning – Setting knowledge and Experience Goals

Lifelong Learning is the self-motivated voluntary pursuit of learning for personal or professional reasons. The four lifelong learning categories are formal, nonformal, informal and self-directed. These categories are supported by the four pillars of lifelong learning, which are learning to know, learning to do, learning to live together, and learning to be. Of the aforementioned explanations of lifelong learning, the one I most relate to, and practice, is having well-defined goals that focus on actions based on knowledge. This “experience goal” enables me to perform inclusive growth. Inclusive growth is so important to building trust in oneself and finding meaning, hope, and comfort in your life. Inclusive growth requires intelligence through seeking the required knowledge, spirituality, walking in faith and trust, both physically and mentally, which are the cornerstones of living a well-lived life. Seek the knowledge, stay informed. Ask questions that provide you with a voice in the choices that affect your life.
Lifelong learning segues us back to my August blog on being the “Driver of Your Life,” Self-Advocacy. Self-Advocacy is the act of speaking up for oneself and one’s interest. How do we apply self-advocacy in pursuing lifelong learning? First step, gaining knowledge of the resources and skills to act in a way to support your needs and goals. Are you actively seeking workshops, roundtables, town halls and education trainings provided by your community’s non-profit organizations, local and state government, and age advocates? As an older adult navigating resources available, highlighting the strengths and values you contribute to your community, do you feel empowered when you attain all the knowledge throughout your lifetime, and do you apply them with confidence, happiness, and effective self-care? Seeking answers to these questions prepares us to set goals for ourselves with clear and deliberate outcomes.
The commitment to setting knowledge and experience goals gives us the opportunity to look back over our accomplishments and enjoy the satisfactions that success brings. Back on personal note, my goal when joining the Juanita C. Grant Foundation was to be part of the journey of advocating for older adults in my community. During my 7 years as a board member, I can say with a conviction that the quality of life I seek as I age in a rapidly changing world is a lifelong learning process.
