The Third Roundtable Education Series

The Juanita C. Grant Foundation held its third Roundtable Education Series yesterday at the South Bowie Library in Bowie, Maryland. The topic was “Intergeneration Conversation on Aging-Finding a Common Language.
The audience was a mix of government agencies, advocacy organizations, entrepreneurs, residents and educators. The discussion centered on two major areas. The first topic discussed was “How do you leverage the strengths of each generation to find more in common to build a strong work culture”. The second question discussed was “What are the critical steps from your vantage point in the generations working together with government, community organizations and others to create shared living, working and recreation areas resulting in a community where all can age well together”. Common themes were taking a pause in reacting to others to LISTEN and LEARN. Sharing experiences and appreciating challenges each generation faces provides an opportunity to tune in and grow. Conversations on finding common ground and creating intergenerational work places, housing arrangements, recreation sharing will lead to greater understanding how to leverage the strengths of all generations. A new approach to retirement planning, continuing education offerings, human resource planning for the work culture and housing are the big ticket change agents.
